R/V Shackleford: Advanced Hydrographic Survey Vessel for Offshore Wind & Ocean Research

All American Marine (AAM) proudly delivers the R/V Shackleford, a 73-foot aluminum catamaran research vessel, to Geodynamics, an NV5 company. Designed for hydrographic and geophysical survey missions, this state-of-the-art vessel plays a critical role in offshore wind development and scientific exploration along the U.S. Eastern Seaboard.

Innovative Hydrofoil-Assisted Design

Designed by Nic de Waal of Teknicraft Design, the 73’ x 26.7’ semi-displacement aluminum catamaran integrates hydrofoil-assisted hull technology for superior stability, efficiency, and speed. Built to USCG Subchapter T standards, R/V Shackleford is optimized for nearshore and mid-shelf survey operations, reducing mobilization costs and maximizing data accuracy.

Powered by twin EPA Tier 3 diesel engines (803 bhp @ 2100 RPM) and fixed-pitch propellers, the vessel achieves a cruise speed of 18-24 knots with exceptional fuel efficiency. Its 1500-gallon fuel capacity supports multi-day offshore missions, accommodating 16 passengers for day trips and 10 for extended live-aboard operations.

Cutting-Edge Survey Capabilities

R/V Shackleford is equipped with fully dedicated and redundant hydrographic survey systems, ensuring the highest level of data precision and repeatability. Key features include:

  • Kongsberg EM 2040 MKII Multibeam Echosounder, deployed via a retractable strut through the moonpool
  • Dimensional Control (DimCon) metrology techniques for precise IMU/multibeam reference system orientation
  • Coordinate Uncertainty Analysis achieving 0.0001m RMS accuracy
  • Spacious lab spaces for hydrographic and geophysical instrumentation

Supporting Offshore Wind & Marine Exploration

Named after Shackleford Banks, the vessel will enhance Geodynamics’ turnkey offshore survey operations, supporting both nautical charting and subsea exploration for offshore wind projects.

“Our model is simple: the boat itself is a precision survey instrument,” said Chris Freeman, Sr. Vice President of NV5-Geodynamics. “This new best-in-class vessel will provide an unmatched platform for meeting the most stringent offshore survey specifications.”

Advancing Scientific Research & Sustainable Energy

“All American Marine is proud to deliver this vessel to Geodynamics,” said Ron Wille, President & COO of AAM. “R/V Shackleford will significantly expand their capabilities while also supporting the rapidly growing offshore wind industry.”

Built at AAM’s Bellingham, WA facility, R/V Shackleford represents the future of hydrographic research vessels, combining cutting-edge technology, fuel efficiency, and mission-specific design for scientific excellence and sustainable energy development.
