Innovative Research Vessel for the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa

All American Marine (AAM) proudly delivers a 68.5-foot aluminum catamaran research vessel to the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa for the Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB). Designed for advanced oceanographic research and conservation, this state-of-the-art vessel enhances marine exploration, environmental studies, and educational outreach in Hawaiian waters and beyond.

Advanced Hydrofoil-Assisted Design

Designed by Nic de Waal of Teknicraft Design, the 68.5’ x 25’ semi-displacement aluminum catamaran integrates hydrofoil-assisted hull technology for superior speed, efficiency, and stability. Built to USCG certification standards, the vessel operates within 150 nautical miles from shore, supporting multi-day offshore research missions.

Powered by twin Scania DI16, 082M Tier 3 engines (800 mhp @ 2100 RPM) and fixed-pitch propellers, the vessel achieves a cruise speed of 22-24 knots, with a fuel-efficient survey speed of 3 knots. Its 1800-gallon fuel capacity allows for extended-range research missions, supporting 8 scientists for offshore expeditions and up to 22 students and crew for shorter educational trips.

Cutting-Edge Research Capabilities

This vessel is designed for multi-mission ocean research, providing state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment to support marine conservation, ecosystem monitoring, and oceanographic studies. Features include:

  • Spacious wet and dry laboratories for research and data analysis
  • Comfortable live-aboard accommodations for multi-day expeditions
  • Custom-built oceanographic equipment for marine megafauna studies and ecosystem surveys
  • Teknicraft’s patented hydrofoil-assisted hull for fuel efficiency and smooth handling in choppy seas
  • USCG T-Boat certification with below-deck accommodations for extended missions

Enhancing Marine Science & Education

“We are incredibly excited to have a custom-built vessel for our environmentally driven research missions,” said Carl Meyer, Ph.D., University of Hawai‘i Researcher. “AAM understood our mission and provided a design that meets our needs. This vessel will significantly expand our research capabilities.”

Advancing Conservation in the Pacific

“All American Marine remains committed to innovation and sustainability,” said Ron Wille, President & COO of AAM. “This vessel will support the University of Hawai‘i’s research and conservation efforts, contributing to the protection of marine ecosystems in the Pacific.”

Built at AAM’s Bellingham, WA facility, this vessel represents the future of ocean research, combining cutting-edge technology, fuel efficiency, and versatility to advance scientific discovery and marine conservation.
