BLUETIDE Puerto Rico’s Cutting-Edge Marine Research Vessel

All American Marine (AAM) proudly delivers a 73-foot aluminum catamaran research vessel to BLUETIDE Puerto Rico, supporting their mission to advance marine research, education, innovation, and conservation in the U.S. Caribbean. Built to USCG Subchapter T standards, this state-of-the-art vessel is designed for near-coastal and offshore ocean routes, expanding sustainable “Blue Economy” initiatives in the region.

Innovative Hydrofoil-Assisted Design

Designed by Nic de Waal of Teknicraft Design, this 73’ x 26.7’ semi-displacement aluminum catamaran is based on the proven R/V Shearwater design, previously built by AAM for Duke University Marine Lab. It integrates hydrofoil-assisted hull technology, ensuring smooth, fuel-efficient operation while minimizing wave impact and drag.

Powered by twin CAT C18 “D” ACERT Tier 3 engines (803 bhp @ 2100 RPM) and fixed-pitch propellers, the vessel achieves a cruise speed of 18-24 knots with an efficient survey speed of 3 knots. Its 1500-gallon fuel capacity supports extended operations, accommodating 30-day passengers and up to 8 live-aboard personnel in three bunk rooms.

Advanced Research & Survey Capabilities

The vessel is fully equipped to support marine science and conservation efforts, featuring:

  • Spacious wet and dry laboratories for oceanographic research
  • Onboard live-aboard accommodations for extended missions
  • Teknicraft’s patented hull and bow wave piercer for a stable, cushioned ride in varying sea conditions
  • Optimized fuel efficiency for sustainable, cost-effective operations

Expanding Marine Research & Innovation

“As islanders, we are conditioned to see the sea as a border that limits and isolates us,” said Guifre Tort, former Interim Executive Director of BLUETIDE. “This vessel will allow us to explore, innovate, and spearhead a new economy for the region.”

Advancing Sustainable Ocean Exploration

“All American Marine remains committed to merging cutting-edge technology with functional, mission-driven vessel design,” said Ron Wille, President & COO of AAM. “This vessel will help BLUETIDE shape the future of marine research and conservation in Puerto Rico and beyond.”

Built at AAM’s Bellingham, WA facility, this vessel represents a new era in sustainable ocean research, reinforcing BLUETIDE’s commitment to protecting marine ecosystems and driving economic growth through responsible marine innovation.
