M/V Spirit: High-Speed, Low-Wake Passenger Ferry for Juneau, Alaska

All American Marine (AAM) proudly delivers the M/V Spirit, a 72-foot high-speed passenger ferry, designed for fast, fuel-efficient, and environmentally sensitive transportation in Juneau, Alaska. Originally built for a groundbreaking research study, the M/V Spirit has since been adapted for daily ferry operations, offering smooth, stable, and low-impact transit.

Innovative Low-Wake, Eco-Friendly Hull Design

Designed to reduce wake energy and protect sensitive shorelines, the M/V Spirit integrates:

  • A cutting-edge, hydrodynamic hull design that minimizes wave impact on coastal areas
  • Advanced wake wash reduction technology, developed through a DOT-funded research project
  • Fuel-efficient propulsion, ensuring smooth operation with reduced environmental impact

Pioneering Research in Sustainable Ferry Transit

Originally commissioned by Pacific International Engineering (PIE) as part of a Department of Transportation (DOT) grant, the M/V Spirit was used in a study on fast ferry operations in Rich Passage, an environmentally sensitive waterway near Seattle.

During the study, PIE:

  • Analyzed hull performance and wake wash data from similar vessels, including the Condor Express
  • Confirmed that existing hull designs could meet low-wake requirements without sacrificing speed or efficiency
  • Recommended investing in shoreline erosion mitigation, rather than restricting ferry operations

Enhancing Passenger Ferry Service in Juneau

Following its research role, the M/V Spirit transitioned into passenger service in Juneau, Alaska, where it now provides:

  • Fast, reliable ferry transport for residents and visitors
  • A smooth, fuel-efficient ride with minimal environmental impact
  • A model for future low-wake, high-speed ferry designs

Leading the Future of Sustainable Passenger Ferries

Built at AAM’s Bellingham, WA facility, the M/V Spirit represents a new era of environmentally conscious, high-speed ferry service, balancing efficiency, sustainability, and passenger comfort.

With its low-wake design, advanced research background, and proven fuel efficiency, the M/V Spirit continues to set the standard for next-generation fast ferries, offering eco-friendly transportation solutions for coastal communities.
