All American Marine, a leader in custom and innovative aluminum vessel construction, is proud to announce that the Cal Poly Humboldt research vessel North Wind has been named the 2025 “Ship of the Year” by Professional Mariner / American Ship Review. The vessel is featured on the cover of the publication’s annual compendium of newbuilds, recognized for setting a new standard in sustainable research vessel design.
Delivered in March of 2025, the 78-foot North Wind embodies the future of marine science platforms. Designed by Teknicraft and constructed at AAM’s Bellingham facility, the catamaran features twin MAN D2862LE43B EPA Tier 4 engines with diesel particulate filters (DPF), meeting meets California’s stringent environmental standards while delivering exceptional performance. The vessel is capable of fully laden cruising at speeds exceeding 28 knots at 80% engine load.
The vessel incorporates Teknicraft’s signature hydrofoil-assisted hull design, which reduces drag, improves fuel efficiency, and delivers a smoother ride in challenging seas. Its hull, refined through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling, minimizes wake energy and maximizes performance, essential for extended research missions.
The North Wind was chosen as “Ship of the Year” for its combination of technological advancement, environmental performance, and mission versatility. Each year, Professional Mariner’s editorial team selects one U.S.-built vessel for this distinction, honoring designs that not only push the industry forward but also deliver meaningful impact to the communities they serve.

Its selection as Ship of the Year highlights the growing role of low emission, fuel efficient and technological advanced research vessels with multi-mission capabilities.
