R/V Shearwater: Advanced Research Vessel for Duke University Marine Lab

All American Marine (AAM) proudly delivers the R/V Shearwater, a 77-foot hydrofoil-assisted aluminum catamaran, to Duke University Marine Lab (DUML). Built to USCG Subchapter T standards, this state-of-the-art vessel enhances marine science, conservation research, and oceanographic studies along the Atlantic Seaboard.

Innovative Hydrofoil-Assisted Design

Designed by Teknicraft Design, the 77’ x 26.5’ semi-displacement catamaran integrates hydrofoil-assisted hull technology for superior fuel efficiency, stability, and low-wake energy. The vessel is powered by twin Tier 3 CAT C18 “D” ACERT engines (803 bhp @ 2100 RPM) and achieves a cruising speed of 24 knots.

With live-aboard accommodations for 14, the R/V Shearwater supports 30 passengers for research missions, providing an unparalleled platform for marine exploration and ocean sustainability studies.

Cutting-Edge Research Capabilities

The vessel enables DUML scientists and researchers to conduct marine ecology, biological oceanography, and renewable energy studies. Key features include:

  • Spacious wet and dry laboratories for oceanographic research
  • State-of-the-art scientific equipment for seafloor mapping and marine species monitoring
  • Galley, sleeping quarters, and educational spaces for extended research expeditions
  • Hydrofoil-assisted hull for reduced drag and increased efficiency

Expanding Marine Science & Education

The Duke Marine Lab, located on Pivers Island in Beaufort, North Carolina, is a year-round teaching and research facility. The R/V Shearwater, funded by an $11 million gift, will expand research, teaching, and outreach programs, serving graduate, undergraduate, and K-12 students, as well as external researchers.

“All American Marine is proud to have built this state-of-the-art education platform,” said Ron Wille, President & COO of AAM. “With Teknicraft’s patented hydrofoil design, this vessel offers fuel efficiency, stability, and cutting-edge research capabilities.”

Advancing Ocean Science & Conservation

Built at AAM’s Bellingham, WA facility, R/V Shearwater sets a new standard for research vessels, providing DUML and partner institutions with an advanced, fuel-efficient platform for ocean discovery and conservation.
