River Gorge Explorer: High-Speed Hydrofoil Catamaran for San Francisco Bay

Originally built for the Tennessee Aquarium, the 65-foot hydrofoil-assisted catamaran, River Gorge Explorer, now operates in San Francisco Bay, providing fast, efficient, and comfortable passenger transportation. With a top speed of 50 mph, this smooth-riding aluminum catamaran ensures safe, high-speed travel while delivering breathtaking panoramic views.

Innovative Hydrofoil-Assisted Design

Designed by Teknicraft Design Ltd., the 65’ x 23’6” aluminum catamaran features a hydrodynamic hull and hydrofoil system, allowing for:

  • Minimal water resistance and reduced draft, enhancing speed and fuel efficiency
  • One-third less horsepower and fuel consumption compared to traditional vessels
  • Extreme stability and smooth performance, even at high speeds

Built to USCG Subchapter T standards, the marine-grade aluminum hull ensures durability and safety, making it an ideal vessel for high-speed passenger transit.

Unmatched Passenger Experience

The River Gorge Explorer is designed for comfort and optimal sightseeing, featuring:

  • Angled Beurteaux seating for unobstructed views through side windows and sky panes
  • LCD monitors throughout the cabin for route information and entertainment
  • Onboard concession kiosk for passenger refreshments
  • Aft deck and upper observation deck with 360-degree views of San Francisco Bay

Powerful & Efficient Propulsion System

Equipped with four C-18 ACERT engines (875 bhp @ 2200 RPM) and four Hamilton Jet HJ 403 waterjets, the vessel achieves exceptional maneuverability, efficiency, and speed.

“The hydrofoil-assisted design reduces overall weight and increases fuel efficiency,” said Ron Wille, President & COO of All American Marine. “This allows operators to maintain high-speed service without excessive fuel consumption, even with rising fuel costs.”

Advancing High-Speed Passenger Transport

Built at AAM’s Bellingham, WA facility, River Gorge Explorer sets a new standard in fast, fuel-efficient, and passenger-friendly ferry service, providing a sustainable, high-performance solution for rapid transit across San Francisco Bay.
