Enhydra: North America’s Largest Hybrid-Electric Passenger Vessel

All American Marine (AAM) proudly delivers Enhydra, a 128-foot hybrid-electric passenger excursion vessel, to Red and White Fleet in San Francisco Bay. Built to USCG Subchapter K standards, this 600-passenger aluminum monohull is the largest lithium-ion battery hybrid-powered vessel in North America, offering a sustainable, low-emission solution for harbor tours.

Innovative Hybrid-Electric Propulsion

Designed by Nic de Waal of Teknicraft Design, Enhydra integrates BAE Systems’ HybriDrive propulsion system, which includes:

  • Parallel hybrid power from a Cummins QSL9 410 mhp diesel engine & lithium-ion battery packs
  • 80 kWh Corvus Energy batteries with future expansion capability for zero-emission operation
  • AC traction motor for instant torque and precise speed control
  • Veem Star 4-blade propellers for enhanced efficiency

This cutting-edge hybrid system allows the vessel to operate silently and emissions-free at lower speeds, switching to generator-assisted power for higher speeds and extended range.

Enhancing the San Francisco Bay Tour Experience

Enhydra is designed to provide an unparalleled sightseeing experience, featuring:

  • Three spacious passenger decks with panoramic views
  • Wrap-around outdoor viewing areas and an open-air top deck
  • ADA-accessible main deck and bow for inclusive passenger access
  • Snack bars on every level for enhanced onboard amenities

“With its low noise and vibration levels, Enhydra reduces impact on local marine life while delivering a superior passenger experience,” said Matt Mullett, CEO of AAM. “This vessel is a significant step toward full decarbonization in the maritime industry.”

Advancing Red and White Fleet’s Commitment to Sustainability

Founded in 1892, Red and White Fleet is a pioneer in eco-friendly maritime operations. “Enhydra is phase one in our transition toward fully electric vessels,” said Joe Burgard, VP of Operations at Red and White Fleet. “We are excited for our guests to experience San Francisco Bay from the silent decks of Enhydra.”

Built at AAM’s Bellingham, WA facility, Enhydra represents the future of sustainable passenger ferries, reinforcing Red and White Fleet’s commitment to innovation, efficiency, and environmental stewardship.
